Target Information

This gene encodes a homodimeric glycoprotein that hydrolyzes terminal alpha-galactosyl moieties from glycolipids and glycoproteins. It primarily hydrolyzes ceramide trihexoside and catalyzes the conversion of melibiose into galactose and glucose. Mutations in this gene can disrupt enzyme synthesis and stability, leading to Fabry disease—a rare lysosomal storage disorder resulting from defective catabolism of alpha-D-galactosyl glycolipid moieties.
