Target Information
Interleukin 2 (IL-2) is an immuno-modulatory cytokine crucial for the proliferation of activated T cells and differentiation of B cells, NK cells, monocytes, and macrophages. IL-2 signals through the IL-2 receptor (IL-2R), a heterotrimeric protein complex whose gamma chain is shared by IL-4 and IL-7.
In mature thymocytes, IL-2 gene expression is monoallelic, representing a unique regulatory mode for precise gene expression. Disruption of IL-2-like genes in mice leads to ulcerative colitis-like disease, indicating IL-2’s essential role in immune response to antigens.
