Target Information
Caspase 7 is a member of the cysteine protease family, divided into apoptotic and inflammatory subfamilies. Unlike inflammatory caspases, apoptotic caspases are involved in cell death processes. Caspase 7 functions as an executioner caspase, activated by initiator caspases to cleave cellular substrates leading to apoptosis. It shares homology with caspases 1 and 3 and the C. elegans cell death protein CED-3. Alternative splicing of Caspase-7 mRNA produces three distinct isoforms, and its activity can be inhibited by XIAP expression. Diseases associated with CASP7 include Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus 17 and Aleutian Mink Disease.
