Target Information
Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family proteins are involved in extracellular matrix breakdown during normal physiological processes such as embryonic development, reproduction, and tissue remodeling, as well as in pathological conditions like arthritis and metastasis. Most MMPs are secreted as inactive proproteins that are activated by cleavage from extracellular proteinases. The MMP17 gene encodes a GPI-anchored membrane-type MMP, distinguishing it from other transmembrane MT-MMPs. This protein is known to activate MMP-2 through cleavage.
