SARS-CoV-2 (Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2), also known as 2019-nCoV, is a positive-sense single-stranded RNA virus that caused coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
SARS-CoV-2 contains a glycosylated spike (S) protein composed of S1 and S2 subunits. The S1 subunit includes a receptor-binding domain (RBD) that binds to the ACE2 receptor on target cells.


Target Information

SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2), also known as 2019-nCoV, causes illnesses ranging from mild cold-like symptoms to severe respiratory distress.
The Spike (S) protein plays a key role in viral attachment, fusion, and entry, serving as a target for antibody and vaccine development.
The receptor-binding domain (RBD, S-RBD) in the Spike protein binds strongly to human and bat ACE2 receptors, exhibiting higher affinity than SARS-CoV RBD.
SARS-CoV-2 S protein is 1273 amino acids long, consisting of:

  • Signal peptide (1–13 aa)
  • S1 subunit (14–685 aa)
  • S2 subunit (686–1273 aa)

The S-ECD represents the extracellular domain of the Spike protein.
