Target Information
Iron-sulfur (Fe-S) clusters are essential cofactors for various mitochondrial enzymes and other proteins within subcellular compartments. These clusters consist of sulfur and iron and are assembled through multiple steps involving cysteine desulfurases, iron donors, chaperones, and scaffold proteins.
The ISCU gene encodes two isomeric forms, ISCU1 and ISCU2, which serve as Fe-S cluster scaffold proteins. Mutations in this gene are associated with myopathy characterized by severe exercise intolerance and myoglobinuria.
