Target Information
Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) is a proinflammatory cytokine expressed by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. It is synthesized as a 31 kDa inactive pro-form that accumulates in the cytosol. Activation of inflammasomes leads to cleavage of pro-IL-1β into the active 17 kDa protein via caspase-1. IL-1β lacks a signal peptide for the classical ER/Golgi pathway and is secreted through an alternate mechanism. It signals through IL-1RI and IL-1RII receptors and is regulated by IL-1 Receptor Antagonist (IL-1RA). IL-1β plays a key role in innate immunity and inflammation, with elevated levels linked to chronic inflammatory diseases.
