Adenoviruses are DNA viruses widely distributed in nature and frequently cause acute upper respiratory tract infections such as the common cold.
There are 49 known human adenovirus serotypes divided into six subgroups (A–E). They are associated with respiratory illness, conjunctivitis, gastroenteritis, and can be sexually transmitted.
Some types have oncogenic potential, though most cause self-limiting febrile illnesses involving inflammation of conjunctivae and the respiratory tract.
The virus is often found in surgically removed tonsils/adenoids, indicating latent infection. Reactivation may occur in immunosuppressed patients (e.g., AIDS).
