Target Information

Influenza viruses consist of three types (Influenza A, B, and C), which make up three of the five genera in the Orthomyxoviridae family. Commonly known as the flu, influenza strains can affect both birds and mammals. Influenza strains form roughly spherical particles with a viral envelope containing two main glycoproteins—hemagglutinin and neuraminidase—wrapped around the RNA genome and associated viral proteins. The influenza genome comprises seven to eight segments of negative-sense RNA, each encoding different viral proteins. Influenza spreads seasonally, causing millions of severe cases and hundreds of thousands of deaths annually, with higher mortality in pandemic years.
