Target Information

This gene encodes a transmembrane protein localized in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). It is involved in the degradation of misfolded proteins in the ER and may play a role in inflammation control. The protein facilitates the transfer of misfolded proteins from the ER to the cytosol for proteasomal degradation via a ubiquitin-dependent pathway. It is a selenoprotein containing selenocysteine (Sec), encoded by the UGA codon, which normally signals translation termination. The 3′ UTR of selenoprotein mRNAs includes a conserved stem-loop structure called the SECIS element, essential for recognizing UGA as a Sec codon instead of a stop signal.
