Target Information
This gene encodes a transmembrane protein localized in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). It is involved in the degradation of misfolded proteins in the ER and may play a role in inflammation control.
Selenoprotein S participates in transferring misfolded proteins from the ER to the cytosol for proteasomal degradation in a ubiquitin-dependent manner.
It contains the rare amino acid selenocysteine (Sec), encoded by the UGA codon. The 3′ UTR of selenoprotein mRNAs includes a conserved SECIS element, enabling UGA recognition as a Sec codon rather than a stop signal.
