Target Information
TNF alpha is a multifunctional proinflammatory cytokine that belongs to the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) superfamily. It is mainly secreted by macrophages and binds to its receptors TNFRSF1A/TNFR1 and TNFRSF1B/TNFBR. TNF alpha regulates immune cells, cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, lipid metabolism, and coagulation. It exists as multimers but shows a single 17 kDa band under non-reducing SDS-PAGE conditions. Knockout studies in mice suggest a neuroprotective role, and TNF alpha can induce tumor necrosis in tumor-bearing mice. It plays roles in immune responses to bacterial, viral, parasitic, and fungal infections, and has been implicated in autoimmune diseases, insulin resistance, and cancer.
