Target Information
MMP13 (collagenase 3) plays a key role in the degradation of extracellular matrix proteins including fibrillar collagen, fibronectin, TNC, and ACAN.
It cleaves triple helical collagens such as type I, II, and III, showing the highest activity with soluble type II collagen.
Additionally, MMP13 can degrade collagen types IV, XIV, and X.
It is involved in wound healing, tissue remodeling, cartilage degradation, bone development, mineralization, and ossification.
MMP13 is required for normal embryonic bone development and ossification.
Mutations in this gene can lead to spondyloepimetaphyseal dysplasia Missouri type, metaphyseal anadysplasia 1, and metaphyseal dysplasia Sphar type.
