Target Information
Synuclein family proteins are abundantly expressed in neuronal cytosol and presynaptic terminals. In vertebrates, they are encoded by three different genes.
Synucleins are implicated in major diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease (PD), and breast cancer.
- In AD, peptides derived from alpha-synuclein form part of amyloid plaques.
- In PD, alpha-synuclein accumulates in Lewy bodies, and certain alleles are linked to familial PD.
- In breast cancer, elevated gamma-synuclein expression correlates with disease progression.
Synucleins may also play a role in membrane plasticity within the developing song control system of songbirds.
