Target Information
This protein belongs to the aldehyde dehydrogenase family. The ALDH1A2 enzyme catalyzes the synthesis of retinoic acid (RA) from retinaldehyde. Retinoic acid, a derivative of vitamin A, acts as a hormonal signaling molecule in both developing and adult tissues. Studies suggest that ALDH1A2 and CYP26A1 together regulate local embryonic retinoic acid levels, contributing to posterior organ development and preventing spina bifida. Three transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been identified for this gene.
