Target Information
Structural Maintenance of Chromosomes (SMC) family proteins are essential for nuclear events requiring structural changes of chromosomes, such as mitotic chromosome organization, DNA recombination and repair, and global transcriptional repression.
SMC1 and SMC3 form a heterodimeric complex required for metaphase progression and sister chromatid cohesion. Mutations in the SMC1A gene can cause Cornelia de Lange syndrome 2.
