Target Information
The CYP2E1 gene encodes a member of the cytochrome P450 superfamily of enzymes. These monooxygenases catalyze reactions involved in drug metabolism and synthesis of cholesterol, steroids, and other lipids.
CYP2E1 localizes to the endoplasmic reticulum and is induced by ethanol, diabetic state, and starvation.
It metabolizes endogenous substrates (ethanol, acetone, acetal) and exogenous substrates (benzene, carbon tetrachloride, ethylene glycol, nitrosamines).
This enzyme may be involved in gluconeogenesis, hepatic cirrhosis, diabetes, and cancer.
