이 유전자는 sterol sensing domain (SSD)과 7개의 WD domain을 가진 단백질을 암호화합니다. 콜레스테롤 존재 시, 이 단백질은 sterol regulatory element binding proteins (SREBPs)에 결합하여 ER에서 골지로의 수송을 매개합니다. 이후 SREBPs는 단백질 분해를 통해 활성화되어 sterol 생합성을 조절합니다.
