Target Information

CIITA contains an acidic transcriptional activation domain, four LRRs (leucine-rich repeats), and a GTP binding domain. It is located in the nucleus and acts as a positive regulator of class II MHC gene transcription, often referred to as the “master control factor” for these genes. CIITA binds GTP, facilitating nuclear transport, and functions as a coactivator via intrinsic acetyltransferase activity. Mutations in this gene are associated with bare lymphocyte syndrome type II, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and possibly myocardial infarction.
