Mesothelin은 중피세포에서 발현되는 GPI-anchored 세포막 당단백질로, 중피종, 난소암, 췌장암 등에서 과발현되는 것으로 알려져 있습니다. 정상 조직에서는 흉막, 심막, 복막의 중피세포에 제한적으로 발현됩니다.
Mesothelin의 단백질 절단으로 생성되는 megakaryocyte potentiating factor (MPF)는 혈소판 형성에 관여할 수 있는 것으로 알려져 있습니다.
Mesothelin과 MPF는 종양 세포의 증식, 이동, 부착 독립적 성장, 전이 등 종양 진행 과정에 관여할 가능성이 제시되고 있습니다.
