Target Information
A bidirectional lipid cholinephosphotransferase capable of converting phosphatidylcholine (PC) and ceramide to sphingomyelin (SM) and diacylglycerol (DAG), and the inverse reaction. The reaction direction depends on the relative concentrations of DAG and ceramide as phosphocholine acceptors. The enzyme recognizes the choline head group on the substrate and requires two fatty chains on the choline-P donor molecule for efficient substrate recognition. It may not function strictly as a sphingomyelin synthase. The enzyme is inhibited by bacterial PC-phospholipase C inhibitor D609 and is localized to the Golgi apparatus and Golgi membrane as a multi-pass membrane protein. It is possibly present in brain, heart, kidney, liver, muscle, and stomach tissues.
