Target Information
Voltage-dependent anion channel (VDAC) proteins are abundant, pore-forming proteins belonging to the eukaryotic mitochondrial porins. They are located in the mitochondrial outer membrane and also expressed in the plasma membrane.
At least three different VDAC genes have been identified in vertebrates. VDAC proteins play essential roles in cellular metabolism and the early stages of apoptosis.
VDAC forms a major pathway for metabolite exchange (e.g., ADP/ATP, succinate, citrate) between the cytosol and mitochondria. VDAC1 in the plasma membrane contributes to apoptosis regulation, potentially via its redox activity.
