Voltage-dependent anion channel (VDAC) proteins are abundant, pore-forming proteins located in the mitochondrial outer membrane and also expressed in the plasma membrane. Three different VDAC genes have been identified in vertebrates. VDAC proteins play a key role in cellular metabolism and the early stages of apoptosis. VDAC serves as a major pathway for metabolite exchange (e.g., ADP/ATP, succinate, citrate) between cytosol and mitochondria. VDAC1 in the plasma membrane may regulate apoptosis through its redox activity.
