2차 항체는 HRP, AP, 형광 등 다양한 검출 시스템을 사용할 수 있는 유연성을 제공하며, 여러 2차 항체가 하나의 1차 항체에 결합할 수 있어 신호 증폭을 통한 감도 향상이 가능합니다.
대부분의 2차 항체는 대상 종의 면역글로불린을 이용해 숙주 동물에 면역하여 생산되며, 면역친화 크로마토그래피, 항체 절편화, 라벨 결합 등의 추가 정제 및 변형을 통해 높은 특이성을 가진 시약으로 제작됩니다.
