eIF4E는 번역 효율 향상, 스플라이싱, mRNA 안정성, RNA 핵 내 수출 등 여러 세포 과정에 관여합니다. 모든 진핵세포 mRNA는 5' 말단에 7-methylguanosine cap 구조(m7GpppX)를 가지며, eIF4E는 이 cap 구조에 리보솜을 유도하는 번역 개시 인자입니다. EIF4E는 자유형과 EIF4F 복합체의 일부로 존재하며, EIF4F는 EIF4A(ATPase 및 RNA helicase 활성을 가짐)와 EIF4G(220 kD)로 구성됩니다. EIF4E는 진핵세포 단백질 합성의 속도 제한 요소로 작용합니다.
