Target Information
The SMPD4 gene encodes a sphingomyelinase enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of membrane sphingomyelin to produce phosphorylcholine and ceramide. It is activated by DNA damage, cellular stress, and tumor necrosis factor, and downregulated by wild-type p53. The protein localizes to the endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi network.
