Target Information

The BMP-4 gene encodes a member of the bone morphogenetic protein family, part of the transforming growth factor-beta superfamily. These proteins are key growth and differentiation factors. BMPs were initially identified by their ability to induce endochondral osteogenesis. BMP-4 plays a crucial role in bone formation and its reduced expression is linked to bone disorders such as Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva.
Alternative splicing in the 5′ untranslated region produces three variants encoding an identical protein.
