Target Information
Autophagy is the process by which endogenous proteins and damaged organelles are degraded intracellularly. It is essential for maintaining cellular homeostasis and remodeling during differentiation, metamorphosis, non-apoptotic cell death, and aging. Reduced autophagy levels have been observed in some malignant tumors, suggesting a role in controlling unregulated cell growth associated with cancer.
This gene encodes a member of the autophagin protein family and is part of the C-54 family of cysteine proteases. Distinct transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
