SETD8는 히스톤 메틸트랜스퍼레이스로, 히스톤 H4의 Lys-20을 단메틸화하는 역할을 합니다. H4 Lys-20 단메틸화는 유사분열 시기에 풍부하며, 전사 억제를 위한 특정 에피제네틱 표지로 작용합니다. 이 단백질은 주로 유크로마틴 영역에서 기능하며, 유전자 침묵화에 중심적인 역할을 합니다. 또한 세포 증식, 염색체 응축, 세포질 분열에 관여하며, 자유 히스톤보다 뉴클레오솜을 더 선호하는 기질로 사용합니다.
