Target Information
XBP1 encodes a transcription factor that regulates MHC class II genes by binding to a promoter element referred to as an X box. This gene product is a bZIP protein, which also acts as a cellular transcription factor interacting with viral enhancer regions such as those of T cell leukemia virus type 1.
Upon accumulation of unfolded proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), XBP1 mRNA undergoes unconventional splicing mediated by IRE1, producing the active isoform XBP1(S). The unspliced isoform, XBP1(U), functions as a negative feedback regulator of XBP1(S). A pseudogene of XBP1 is localized to chromosome 5.
