Target Information

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, causing membrane hyperpolarization through the opening of a Cl⁻ channel associated with the GABAA receptor (GABAA-R) subtype.
GABAA-Rs are important therapeutic targets for sedative, anxiolytic, and hypnotic agents and are implicated in diseases such as epilepsy, anxiety, depression, and substance abuse.
The GABAA-R is a multimeric subunit complex composed of multiple alpha, beta, and gamma subunits and their splice variants. Expression of alpha and beta subunits alone yields GABA-sensitive receptors, but coexpression with a gamma subunit is required for benzodiazepine modulation.
Different alpha subunits may mediate distinct benzodiazepine effects, and phosphorylation of beta subunits modulates GABAA-R function.
