Target Information
T cell receptors (TCR) enable discrimination between foreign and self-peptides presented by MHC class II molecules, essential for adaptive immune responses. TCR recognition of self-peptides has been linked to autoimmune diseases, while mutant self-peptides are associated with tumors. Engagement of TCRs by bacterial superantigens can lead to toxic shock syndrome. Autoantibodies to V beta segments of TCRs have been isolated from patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), potentially modulating TH1-mediated inflammatory responses.
Most human T cells express the TCR alpha-beta along with CD4 or CD8 molecules. A small subset lacks both (double negative, DN) and may be increased in autoimmune or immunodeficiency disorders. Gamma-delta T cells, mainly found in epithelial tissues, exhibit reduced TCR diversity and distinct antigen recognition, with subsets showing antitumor and immunoregulatory activity.
