Product Specific Information
This antibody reacts with the human Syndecan-1 (CD138) protein.
On Western blots, a single band at approximately 90 kDa represents the glycosylated form of CD138; occasionally, a band of ~31 kDa representing the un-glycosylated form may appear.
Reactivity has been confirmed with human T47D, SW-480, and PC-3 cell lysates by Western blotting, and with FFPE human gastric and breast cancer tissues, as well as mouse and rat stomach, small bowel, and skin tissues by immunohistochemistry.
For optimal IHC results with FFPE tissues, heat-induced epitope retrieval (HIER) using EDTA (pH 8.0) is recommended prior to staining.
Target Information
CD138 (Syndecan-1) is a transmembrane proteoglycan that binds various cytokines and extracellular matrix components, influencing multiple developmental processes.
It is mainly expressed in differentiating keratinocytes and is transiently upregulated in all epidermal layers upon tissue injury.
CD138 is highly expressed on plasma cells and can also be detected on fibroblasts, vascular smooth muscle cells, and endothelial cells.
Alterations in CD138 expression are often correlated with cancer progression.
Serum levels of soluble sCD138 are used as a prognostic factor in cancer studies.
