Target Information

Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) is a neurotransmitter that exerts diverse physiological effects by binding to multiple receptor subtypes, including the 5-HT2 family of G-protein-coupled receptors. These receptors activate phospholipase C and D signaling pathways. The HTR2C gene encodes the 2C subtype of serotonin receptor, whose mRNA undergoes multiple RNA editing events converting adenosine to inosine. This editing alters amino acids in the second intracellular loop, producing receptor isoforms with differing G-protein interactions and signaling activity, thereby modulating serotonergic neurotransmission in the central nervous system. Abnormal 5-HT2C RNA editing patterns have been observed in depressed suicide victims.
