Target Information
The Keratin multigene family consists of “soft” epithelial cytokeratins and “hard” hair keratins. Epithelial keratins contribute to epithelial layer formation, while hair keratins form nails and hair.
Keratin 84 (KRT84, HB4, KRTHB4) is a 600 amino acid basic/neutral type II keratin expressed in hair follicles. It heterodimerizes with type I keratins to form hair and nails.
The KRT84 gene is located on human chromosome 12, which encodes over 1,100 genes and constitutes approximately 4.5% of the human genome. Chromosome 12 is associated with various genetic disorders, including hypochondrogenesis, achondrogenesis, and Kniest dysplasia.
