Target Information
The ABCG5 gene encodes a member of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamily. These proteins transport various molecules across cellular membranes and are classified into seven subfamilies (ABC1, MDR/TAP, MRP, ALD, OABP, GCN20, White).
ABCG5 belongs to the White subfamily and functions as a half-transporter that limits intestinal absorption and promotes biliary excretion of sterols. It is expressed specifically in the liver, colon, and intestine.
This gene is tandemly arrayed on chromosome 2 with ABCG8 in a head-to-head orientation. Mutations may lead to sterol accumulation and atherosclerosis, as observed in sitosterolemia patients.
