Target Information
The CFHR5 gene belongs to the complement factor H (CFH) gene cluster on chromosome 1. Members of this family contain multiple short consensus repeats (SCRs) typical of complement activation regulators. The encoded protein has nine SCRs: the first two have heparin binding properties, repeats 5–7 bind heparin and C-reactive protein, and the C-terminal repeats resemble the complement component 3b (C3b) binding domain. CFHR5 co-localizes with C3, binds C3b in a dose-dependent manner, and is recruited to tissues damaged by C-reactive protein. Variations in this gene have been associated with membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis type II (MPGNII) and hemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS).
