Target Information
Glutathione peroxidases (Gpxs) are ubiquitously expressed proteins that catalyze the reduction of hydrogen peroxides and organic hydroperoxides by glutathione. Several isoforms differ in primary structure and localization:
- GPx1 (cGPx): Classical cytosolic/mitochondrial, selenium-dependent enzyme.
- GPx2 (GI-GPx): Expressed in gastrointestinal epithelium.
- GPx3 (pGPx): Extracellular plasma enzyme expressed by the kidney and released into blood.
- GPx4 (PH-GPx): Reduces various hydroperoxides, including membrane-integrated hydroperoxides and lipid peroxides.
- Other isoforms (GPx3, GPx5) may contain cysteine instead of selenocysteine.
