HPV E7 단백질은 작은 크기(HPV16 E7은 98개의 아미노산, 약 15kDa)이며, 핵에 위치하는 아연 결합 인산화 단백질입니다. 이들은 아데노바이러스 C 아속의 E1A 단백질과 구조적·기능적으로 유사합니다. HPV16 E7의 첫 16개의 N-말단 아미노산은 E1A 단백질의 보존 영역 1(CR1)과 유사한 부위를 포함하며, 그 다음 영역(37번 아미노산까지)은 E1A의 보존 영역 2(CR2) 전체와 상동성을 가집니다. 이 영역들은 세포 변형에 필수적임이 유전학적 연구로 밝혀졌으며, 바이러스의 변형 메커니즘이 유사함을 시사합니다. CR2 상동 영역에는 종양 억제 단백질 pRb와 결합하는 LXCXE 모티프(잔기 22–26)가 포함되어 있습니다.
