Target Information
Best2 forms calcium-sensitive chloride channels and is permeable to bicarbonate. The Best2 gene belongs to the bestrophin family of anion channels, sharing conserved exon-intron boundaries but differing at the 3′ ends. Bestrophins are transmembrane proteins rich in aromatic residues, including an invariant arg-phe-pro motif. Mutations in Best2 are associated with vitelliform macular dystrophy. Best2 is mainly expressed in retinal pigment epithelium and colon. Diseases associated with BEST2 include Vitelliform Macular Dystrophy and Bestrophinopathy.
