Target Information
The mitochondrial enzyme encoded by the CPS1 gene catalyzes the synthesis of carbamoyl phosphate from ammonia and bicarbonate, representing the first committed step of the urea cycle. This process is crucial for the removal of excess urea from cells. The encoded protein may also serve as a core mitochondrial nucleoid protein. Three transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified; the shortest isoform may not localize to the mitochondrion. Mutations in CPS1 are associated with carbamoyl phosphate synthetase deficiency, susceptibility to persistent pulmonary hypertension, and venoocclusive disease following bone marrow transplantation.
