Target Information

Thyroid hormone receptors (TR), also known as c-erbA-2, are ligand-dependent intracellular proteins that stimulate transcription of specific genes by binding to hormone response elements upon activation by thyroid hormones. Through TR interaction, thyroid hormones regulate metabolism, growth, and development by controlling gene expression for growth hormone, malic enzyme, and hepatic proteins.
There are two forms of TR: TR alpha (chromosome 17) and TR beta (chromosome 3), each with two isoforms (TR alpha-1/2, TR beta-1/2). TR alpha-1 and alpha-2 share identical sequences up to amino acid 370, after which they diverge. TRv alpha-2, which does not bind T3, acts as a negative regulator of functional TR and is 80 amino acids longer than TR alpha-1. The gene encoding thyroid hormone receptor beta-1 is NR1A2.
