WNT8A는 WNT 유전자 패밀리에 속하며, 분비형 신호 단백질을 암호화하는 구조적으로 유사한 유전자로 구성되어 있습니다. 이러한 단백질은 종양 발생(oncogenesis) 및 배아 발생 중 세포 운명 결정과 패턴 형성 조절과 같은 여러 발달 과정에 관여합니다.
이 유전자는 WNT3와 함께 염색체 17q21 영역에 위치해 있으며, NT2 기형암 세포주에서의 발현 연구를 통해 레티노산에 의해 유도되는 NT2 세포의 초기 신경 분화 과정에 관여할 가능성이 제시되었습니다.
