Specificity Comments:
Granzyme B is a granule serine protease stored specifically in NK cells and cytotoxic T cells. Cytolytic T lymphocytes (CTLs) and NK cells recognize and lyse target cells bearing surface antigens from intracellular pathogens. Granzyme B plays a crucial role in inducing apoptosis of target cells during immune responses and serves as a marker for NK/T-cell lymphomas. High cytotoxic T-cell percentages can indicate poor prognosis in Hodgkin’s disease.

Target Information

Granzyme B is a member of the granzyme serine protease family found in cytotoxic T cells and NK cells. It is also known as CGL1 or CTLA-1 and is expressed only in activated cytotoxic T lymphocytes. Granzyme B induces apoptosis in target cells through interaction with the mannose 6-phosphate receptor, initiating caspase-3 activation and DNA fragmentation. It can also activate mitochondrial apoptosis by cleaving Bid protein. Granzymes (A–G in mice) are neutral serine proteases stored in lytic granules of CTLs and NK cells. In humans, fewer granzymes have been identified.
