Potassium channels are a complex class of voltage-gated ion channels with diverse physiological roles, including regulation of neurotransmitter release, heart rate, insulin secretion, neuronal excitability, epithelial electrolyte transport, smooth muscle contraction, and cell volume.
The KCNT1 gene encodes a sodium-activated potassium channel subunit involved in ion conductance and developmental signaling. Mutations in this gene are associated with early-onset epileptic disorders such as malignant migrating partial seizures of infancy and autosomal dominant nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
