Target Information
The protein encoded by the classic MBP gene is a major constituent of the myelin sheath of oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells in the nervous system. MBP-related transcripts are also expressed in bone marrow and immune system. These arise from the long MBP gene (also known as Golli-MBP), which includes three additional upstream exons.
Alternative splicing from the Golli and MBP transcription start sites produces two sets of MBP-related transcripts and proteins:
- Golli-MBP transcripts: Contain unique Golli exons spliced in-frame with MBP exons, encoding hybrid proteins with N-terminal Golli and MBP sequences.
- Classic MBP transcripts: Contain only MBP exons, producing the well-characterized myelin basic proteins.
This conserved gene structure suggests that the MBP transcription unit is an integral part of the Golli transcription unit, important for gene regulation and function.
