POU5F1은 줄기세포 생성 및 세포 대체 치료 연구에 유용하며, Sox2, Klf4, Lin28, c-Myc 등의 전사 인자와 함께 발현되어 유도만능줄기세포(iPS) 생성에 활용됩니다.
최근에는 바이러스 도입 없이 POU5F1, Sox2, Klf4, c-Myc 발현 플라스미드를 사용하여 iPS 세포를 생성할 수 있음이 입증되어 재생의학적 응용에 안전성을 높였습니다.
