Target Information
Heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoproteins (hnRNPs) are proteins that bind directly to nascent RNA polymerase II transcripts and play a key role in transcript-specific packaging and alternative splicing of pre-mRNAs. The M1–M4 proteins form a cluster of abundant hnRNPs that bind strongly to poly(G) and poly(U) RNA homopolymers. These M proteins are members of the ribonucleoprotein consensus sequence family, sharing similarity with a hypothetical RNA-binding protein from Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
They contain a unique MR repeat motif (rich in methionine and arginine), similar to a repeat found in the 64 kDa subunit of cleavage stimulation factor involved in pre-mRNA 3'-end maturation. Immunologically related M proteins exist in a wide range of eukaryotes from human to yeast.
