Target Information
Proteins that directly bind to nascent RNA polymerase II transcripts, the heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoproteins (hnRNPs), play an important role in transcript-specific packaging and alternative splicing of pre-mRNAs.
The M1–M4 hnRNP proteins form a cluster and act as pre-mRNA binding proteins in vivo, binding strongly to poly(G) and poly(U) RNA homopolymers in vitro.
These proteins belong to the ribonucleoprotein consensus sequence family and contain a methionine-arginine–rich hexapeptide repeat motif (MR repeat), similar to the 64 kDa subunit of cleavage stimulation factor involved in 3'-end mRNA processing.
Immunologically related M proteins are found across eukaryotes, from humans to yeast.
