Target Information
Ribonucleases (RNAses) H are enzymes that hydrolyze the RNA strands of RNA/DNA hybrids. Their major role is to remove RNA strands during DNA replication and repair. RNAse H2 consists of three subunits, all essential for activity. Mutations in RNAse H2A or other subunits can cause Aicardi-Goutieres syndrome (AGS), a neurological disorder resembling viral brain infections with elevated IFN-alpha levels. Similar effects are seen with TREX1 mutations, indicating both enzymes may regulate intracellular nucleic acid accumulation and innate immune activation.
